Hot & Toxic

The Toxic Reality of “Natural” Gas

This season . . . love’s not the only thing in the air. Tune in to the explosive new show where one unsuspecting homeowner with a “natural” gas hookup is forced to live with the hottest, most toxic housemates imaginable. The show may be made up, but the methane in your home is very, very real.

The Toxins

“Natural” gas is a hot mess. After all, with 21 pollutants filling the air in your home, there’s no escaping the drama. It’s almost like living with a house full of toxic reality stars. Get to know some of the most dangerous “cast members” of Hot & Toxic!

Nitrogen Dioxide

Respiratory Damager

Meet Di

Get ready America, she is going to take your breath away, literally. As a byproduct of burning “natural” gas, Nitrogen Dioxide harms your lungs, and contributes to respiratory disease and asthma.

Benzene

Cancer-Causer

Meet Ben

His sign is Cancer. . . and he also causes it. Present in “natural” gas, researchers found that using a gas stove produces as much cancer-causing Benzene as living with a smoker.

Carbon Monoxide

Fatally Poisonous

Meet C.MO

She’ll get your heart racing. Maybe a bit too much. At least 1,200 people a year die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning, and gas stoves are a leading source.

Formaldehyde

Highly Toxic irritant

Meet Hyde

He’s a sight for sore eyes. That’s probably because Formaldehyde is a robust irritant of the throat, lungs and eyes, and long-term exposure can cause cancer.

what can i do

The best solution is to stop using “natural” gas entirely and either switch to an induction stove or go all-electric. But that’s not a reality for everyone, so in the meantime, always remember to open a window and run your vent fan.
